New truss tomato E 25.33055 (120-130 grams) variety of Enza Zaden
Monday, 7 February 2011
After the introduction of the middle truss tomato (120-130 grams) E 25.33055 last year. An area of 37 hectares is planted in the Netherlands and 12.5 hectares in Belgium this year.
The market of this segment in truss tomatoes obviously was waiting for a variety with strong green parts, a nice charisma and a tomato which is firmly staying at the truss. The excellent early production, good quality when infected with the Pepino Mosaic Virus and total yield were also good at the several trials last growing season. Due to its high resistance to mildew. Mildew is not find at the variety at all.
The propagation went successful. The plantraiser was able to deliver nice plants in general. At pruned/grafted plants 80% of the plants had 3 leaves between the first and the second truss. Therefore the growers could start with uniform plants which is a great advantage at the start of the cultivation. A rootstock with a generative character is often chosen.
The growers were satisfied with the first period of the cultivation of the E 25.33055. At the earliest sowing dates truss 4 is blossoming now. There is a lot of speed during growth. Also last year we have seen that this variety has an early production. There has been cultivated quietly with an average-24-hour-day-temperature between 16 and 17 degrees at darker days (pre-night 14 degrees, night 16.5-17 degrees with a short afternoon temperature peak of 20-21 degrees). When there are bright weather conditions an increase of the average-24-hour-day-temperature is set. This can be done because E 25.33055 has his strength back quickly after a period of darker weather conditions. It is remarkable that this variety performs well at a fixed firm. Irrigation is done with an EC of 3.5-4 (4 with fixed firm).
At the early sowings the first truss has been pruned at 4, the second and third truss at 5 and truss 4 will be pruned at 6. Depending on the weather conditions it is advised tot prune a truss of 4 or 5 at 5 from the longest day on and after that prune at 6 again.
Looking back at the trials of last year a density of 3.3 stems/m2 seems sufficient during summer. Only at very modern nurseries with a lot of CO2 it is to be considering to go to a density of 3.5 stems/m2. From the moment a side shoot is kept a leaf is taken from the head of the plant every week. This achieves less work load and more light at the trusses.
Last year it was obvious that due to high production at the first part of the cultivation the variety gets enough space to keep enough growth during summer. This is an advantage.
However it is than important to use generative guidelines in time. It will become necessarily tot maintain the temperature till 1 hour after sunset at sunny days.
We will inform you regularly about developments concerning this new variety this year.
